Autism Conferences
From LoveToKnow Autism
Autism conferences are valuable resources that can help everyone involved with pervasive developmental disorders. Caretakers, therapists, families and the medical community can benefit from taking time to attend these gatherings. In some cases, the conferences are recorded for convenient viewing at home or in the office.
Where to Find Autism Conferences
Autism conferences occur in many cities in the United States, Canada and in Europe. A number of resources are available to connect those interested in visiting conference meetings. Some conferences are available online as downloads and some may be ordered one DVD for later viewings.
Heartspring
The Heartspring Conference Series is an excellent source that offers perspectives from the professional and medical realm as well as the valuable perspective of individuals diagnosed on the autism spectrum. The Heartspring conferences are available in a video library available on the organization's website.
Asperger Women Association
The Asperger Women Association is an organization dedicated to teaching people about Asperger syndrome in females. The AWA holds many conferences that address critical subjects including:
- Early identification of Aspergers in females
- Developing tests for females to detect AS
- Personality difference between males and females
- Cultural conditioning
- First-hand experiences from women with AS
Asia Pacific Autism Conference
The Asia Pacific Autism Conference is hosted and developed by the Australian Advisory Board on Autism Spectrum Disorders. Topics include personal experiences, research and workshops. The event lasts three days, offering excellent information and viable approaches for people in Australia.
Autism Society of America
The Autism Society of America is a fantastic resource for people affected by autism and related pervasive developmental disorders. This organization offers many autism conferences that include information about nearly every aspect of the disorders imaginable. Issues covered at the gatherings delve into challenges and triumphs that span the individual's lifetime.
The Autism Society of America offers insight from the professional realm, but it also focuses on helping families by welcoming families and individuals diagnosed with autistic disorders to speak at their conferences as well. In addition to conferences, the ASA offers helpful workshops for families and professionals.
Autism Speaks
Ironically, Autism Speaks is the one organization that does not appear to have autistic speakers at its autism conferences. The gatherings tend to focus on autism research, comorbid conditions and treatments. Areas of interest include:
- Genetic research
- Diagnosis and tests
- Co-existing conditions
- Brain-gut connection and autistic disorders
- Autistic spectrum and epilepsy
- Metabolic issues
- Gastro intestinal problems
- Nutrition therapy
- Medical treatments
- Biomedical approaches
Though the focus appears to be on the medical realm, the conferences through the Defeat Autism Now branch of Autism Speaks also address other therapies and interventions as well.
- Applied behavioral analysis
- Speech therapy
- Occupational therapy
Although some of the conferences address behavioral interventions, DAN stresses that a biomedical approach is necessary to treat autistic disorders.
Autism Conference Speakers
People speaking at autism conferences run the gamut from medical professional to individuals diagnosed on the spectrum. Each speaker has a unique perspective to offer, whether in the realm of psychology, medicine or real-life experiences.
Speakers living with autism include:
- Stephen Shore
- Temple Grandin
- Eileen and Kim Miller
- Sharon daVanport
- Jenny McCarthy
- Judy Brewer
- John Doyle
The list is in no way comprehensive becaue there are many individuals directly affected by pervasive developmental disorders who have dedicated their lives to promoting awareness and education. Many professionals have adopted the same devotion.
- Tony Atwood
- Dr. Mark Mintz
- Mary Jane Weiss PhD.
- Peter Wright
Other Conference Resouces
Many people have difficultly traveling to sites that hold conferences. Some local options may be available in some cities. Check with Autism Link for gatherings in local areas. Area mental health organizations and agencies that offer therapies for autistic disorders can provide information about conferences.
Talk Autism
Talk Autism is a great resource for people who are unable to attend conferences in person. The site features a generous number of virtual speakers that discuss many different topics related to ASD.
Education, Experience and Awareness
Organizations like Autism Speaks are generally interested in research, treatments, causes and cures. Organizations like the Autism Society of America appear to be equally interested in learning about the autistic experience through those closest to it. Every organization shares one aspect; each wants to promote autism awareness through their conferences and in their other communicative efforts.
