It is hard when people automatically expect a child to act and function like others just because he can talk. Autism affects each person differently and it can be so frustrating when people underestimate the severity of the condition.

My son is 7yrs old, he is very verbal, has high average IQ, but can't brush his own teeth, or comb his own hair, has the mentality of a 3-4 yr old, need I go on, and people say to me, he's not as severe as, so and so, who can't talk! That comment makes me crazy! People have no idea what you go through on a day to day basis, behind closed doors! They see him as a brat, that deserves a good whoopin', so others have told me! It makes me sick! But he's high funtioning, because he can talk, and has the smarts, right?!

Sharon, That makes perfect sense. IQ measurements don't tell the entire story and they can be way off the mark when it comes to people on the autism spectrum.

Why do so many people base level of functioning, on IQ? Functional skills, and intelligence are totally seperate things! How would one then, classify an autistic individual with an overall IQ of 81%, with functional skills of under 10%? Would that still make them high funtioning, just based on verbal ability, and IQ? I would say, high intelligence, low funtioning!! Would make more sense would it not?!
